    Description

Antique Bone Parasol Needle Case with Napoleon's Tomb Stanhope
    French * Circa 1890s
This antique figural needle case is carved of bone* in the form of a parasol or umbrella. The top is turned with a closed hand, a symbol of friendship in Victorian times. The hand holds a glass Stanhope viewer with 1 view entitled "Tombeau de Napolèon 1st". The Stanhope is sharp and clear, much nicer than my picture.
    T
    he
parasol has had a break in the stem that's been repaired, but it's sturdy. Other than that it's in excellent condition and it
measures 5" long. It screws together well and has some very fine steel needles.
Similar needle cases are shown on p. 73 of Gay Ann Rogers' excellent book
The Illustrated History of Needlework Tools.
*This item is made of bone from a domestic cow (bovine) and not from an endangered species.
