    Description

When it comes to a hand hooked rug in the free, primitive style, so much of the story is on the reverse, so I've included quite a few photos of the back of this rug to show its excellent condition and just how skillfully it was made.
Although it looks like one from the 19th century, I don't think this rug is an antique. I acquired it at the estate sale of a fine and historic home in Virginia and the furnishings were mainly antiques of the 19th century. But because of its great condition, I believe this rug was commissioned in the 20th century, and made by a local artisan. However, the rug is not signed.
The rug has good weight, yet it's flexible, not stiff.
The foundation material is unfamiliar to me-- It doesn't look like cotton and it's definitely not burlap. Linen maybe?
The wool is a fine gauge, the stitches are close and tight.
This is a beautiful and very well made rug that will last for generations.
