This very old Mortar & Pestle set is in very good condition for its age and past use. I would estimate it dates between the late 1800’s to the early 1900’s. I acquired this set along with some other pharmaceutical and drug store related items from a Pinehurst family member who’s family once owned & operated the Carolina Pharmacy/Drug Store located on main street in Pinehurst NC. The location of the old drug store was a soda fountain style business in 1972 when I first visited Pinehurst. Today the building is the location of a local pub and restaurant.
Other then age and its appearance from use this set has absolutely no issues. The granite stone mortar is free from chips or cracks. From its pour spout to the rim edge the opening measures approximately 7 inches. The number 3 on the base of the mortar indicated its size. It’s also embossed with the manufacture’s name and logo, Thomas Maddock & Son’s Co. Trenton, NJ. TMS Co. Acid Proof Warranted is also embossed into the base. The Pestle has a wood handle and stone base. It’s in very good condition and measures approximately 7 ¾” in length. The pestle’s granite stone base is clearly marked with the number 5. There’s something embossed to the right of the #5 but I’m unable to see it clearly. Together the Mortar & Pestle weight is about 5 lbs. This along with the addition weight of boxing and packing materials will contribute to the high cost of shipping.
